Gov. Reeves Appoints IDS Self-Advocacy Coordinator to State Council

Robert 鈥淭aylor鈥 Carley, self-advocacy coordinator with the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) at The University of 麻豆传媒色情片, has been appointed by Gov. Tate Reeves to serve as a member of the Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities. His three-year term will run through fall 2028.
The Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities is a federally funded entity charged with identifying the needs of people with developmental disabilities in the state. Similar councils exist in every state and in some U.S. territories.
鈥淪ervice has been a strong component of the self-advocacy role at IDS and Taylor has consistently been a leader in demonstrating service to others,鈥 said Dr. Jerry R. Alliston, interim executive director. 鈥淏y serving as a self-advocate on the council, he is able to advocate not only for himself but for all Mississippians with disabilities.鈥
As a council member, Carley will assist in reviewing annual grant submissions, monitoring funded grants, and facilitating the development and implementation of a five-year state plan aimed at improving services for Mississippians with developmental disabilities and their families.
Carley has served with IDS for 10 years as self-advocacy coordinator. Before that, he participated in IDS鈥檚 TRIAD AmeriCorps program and the STEP UP to Leadership Council.
IDS is Mississippi鈥檚 University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. For 49 years, the institute has worked to positively impact the lives of Mississippians with developmental and other disabilities and their families, promoting independence, productivity, and community inclusion. IDS focuses its work in four primary areas: Community Living, Education, Capacity Building and Family Engagement.
