Purpose
To further advance AI literacy and innovation across our campus, the Office of the Provost is pleased to announce a new pilot course initiative: “AI for Social Good: An Interdisciplinary Approach” to be launched in Spring 2026.
Course Overview
This 3-credit hour course will introduce students to the transformative potential of artificial intelligence across academic disciplines and societal contexts. The course will be co-taught by five faculty members from each of the following areas:
- Arts
- Sciences
- Business
- Health
- Education & Human Sciences
Each faculty member participating will design and deliver a 3-week module that applies AI to real-world issues in their field, showcasing how AI can be used for social impact. The tentative schedule is as follows:
- Week 1-3 (Jan. 20-Feb. 6): Module 1
- Week 4-6 (Feb. 9-27): Module 2
- Week 7-10 (Mar. 2-27 – Bye week for Spring Break): Module 3
- Week 11-13 (Mar. 30-Apr. 17): Module 4
- Week 14-16 (Apr. 20-May 8): Module 5
The pilot course will accommodate up to 40 students with open enrollment across majors. It will be delivered face-to-face with a virtual option for Gulf Park students. The days and times are TBA.
Funding Amount
Selected faculty will receive a $3,000 stipend for their participation in curriculum design, instruction, and dissemination of assessment. Stipends will be disbursed over two monthly paychecks in the spring based on the faculty member's assigned module weeks. Additionally, the five schools represented by the faculty members will each receive $1,000 in development funds.
Eligibility
- All full-time, non-visiting faculty who do not hold a dean or director position are eligible to apply.
- Faculty must integrate and deliver their module in Spring 2026.
- Faculty must provide a summary report of the experience and outcomes and present it during a Center for Faculty Development workshop series in Fall 2026.
- Preference will be given to faculty with prior teaching or research experience in AI or related digital technologies.
- Preference will be given to faculty’s willingness to share their module in future semesters to help other 鶹ýɫƬ instructors adopt similar strategies.
Application Requirements
Proposal must include (no more than 1,000 words total):
- Name, rank, college, and department
- Brief two-page vita highlighting relevant accomplishments
- Module title
- Description of Module (250-300 words)
• How AI relates to your discipline
• Alignment with course goals and learning outcomes.
• Sample topics or activities of the 3-week module schedule
• AI tools, pedagogical approaches, or interdisciplinary components used- How does your module promote social good or ethical AI considerations? (100-150 words)
- Assessment (150-200 words)
• Expected impact on student learning
• Proposed methods for assessing outcomes
• Plans for sustaining or scaling the module beyond the pilot course in future semesters- Highlight any previous AI-related teaching, course development, or research experience (100-200 words)
Selection Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated based on:
- Alignment: Integration of the AI module with course learning objectives.
- Integration of AI: Relevance and clarity in connecting AI tools or concepts to your discipline
- Advancement of Social Good: Articulating how the module explores AI’s role in addressing societal needs, promoting equity, improving systems, or enhancing public well-being.
- Feasibility: Clarity and practicality of implementation within the Spring 2026 timeline.
- Rigor: Evidence that the module provides an appropriate share of the total workload for a 3-credit course
- Assessment: Strengths of the proposed method for measuring student success and career readiness.
- AI Experience: Relevant teaching, research, or curriculum development in AI or digital technologies.
- Dissemination: Willingness to present results in a teaching forum or similar and share materials with peers for future adoption.
