School of Ocean Science and Engineering

Educating the Next Generation of Ocean Leaders

At Southern Miss, the School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE) offers a world-class education at exceptional value. Our programs are designed to deliver strong return on investment by combining rigorous academics, hands-on learning, and personalized mentorship—preparing students to meet the growing demand for expertise in marine and coastal environments.

SOSE undergraduate students choose from three distinct programs: Ocean Engineering, which integrates mechanical and ocean systems design with real-world applications; Marine Biology, which immerses students in the study of marine organisms and ecosystems; and Oceanography and Ocean Mapping, which blends geospatial science and oceanographic research to support safe navigation and environmental monitoring.

Each program emphasizes experiential learning through fieldwork, research cruises, and industry partnerships. Students work alongside nationally recognized faculty on research that addresses critical challenges—from sustainable fisheries to climate resilience—gaining skills and mentorship that shape competitive, career-ready graduates. Whether you’re drawn to design, discovery, or environmental stewardship, SOSE provides the tools and opportunities to explore your path and make a meaningful impact.
